One of the best marketing techniques for your new online business is writing articles. It is far superior to placing ads in bringing traffic to your website. The main reason for this is simple; an ad will only work for you during the time that you pay for it to run. Your articles will continue to work for as long as they are posted on the web, and this can be a very long time. Some of my articles continue to bring me traffic after a year or more.

Although article writing can be somewhat time consuming, it is among the most productive marketing activities. Especially when you consider that you can write and submit your articles for free. It doesn't have cost you a penny. Of course, if you prefer, you can pay others to write your articles. And you can even pay companies to submit them, but if you are just starting out, you are better off writing and submitting them yourself.

An article should be written with two purposes in mind. First and foremost, it should give good solid information to the reader. Do not write fluff articles full of self-praise that provide nothing of value. The viewing public is not stupid, after a short while, they will see through this and stop viewing your articles. This is the kiss of death for an article writer. Always provide good information in your articles.

Second, it should entice the viewer to see the information that you have included in the resource box. Always include two or three links to your opt in (squeeze) page along with links to products that you recommend. You will get more clicks on these links if your article and the links in your resource box are related. And, if possible, always try tie the two together.

It is recommended that you publish at least one article per day consistently over several months if you want to see real, long-lasting results from this technique.

Press Releases

Press releases are a little-known and incredibly powerful method of marketing your products and services. Want to get noticed by 10,000 people minimum overnight? Put out a press release. Ever notice that on a Google result set, press releases are listed above the first result on a search? That's the power of press releases. The key with press releases is to make them news and not marketings peak. For example, a press release about how great your product is would not acceptable, but a PR about your charitable contributions, or an independent survey done by your company confirming an authority source on some important issue in your niche would be.

Link Building

Link building involves contacting other websites that are complementary to yours and getting them to link to you. Again, this is a long-term strategy, and you must be consistent in your efforts if you are to be successful with this method.

Alternatively, posting intelligent commentary to a posting of the blog of an expert in your field is also a good way to generate. Make sure that your comment is relevant and useful - don't just spam a link to your site in your comments or you're likely to get deleted.

Videos

Videos are an incredibly powerful way to drive traffic and grab attention for your products or services - just look at the success of YouTube. You can get literally tens of thousands of people looking at your videos within a day of your posting them on YouTube - more if your videos go Viral.

Forums

The Forum model is much like posting comments to blogs. The idea is to post a link to your site in a forum posting or reply, but you have to make sure that your post is relevant or useful, or your post will be deleted and you bill be banned from the forum. So, the best forum strategy is to invest some time in establishing yourself as a forum expert before you start adding links to your site in your posts. It will be much harder for forum administrators to kick you if you are an established and contributing member of their community.

Paid Links / Ads

Paid links on high PR authority sites in your niche are also a great way to drive traffic to your website. They will give you direct traffic to your site, as well as raise your Google search traffic due to increased relevance of your website for your keywords because of a one-way link from a high PR site.

How to Make Quick Money Writing Articles

Many people want to know how to make money by writing articles. I usually tell them that in order to make significant long-term money, they have to write one or more articles per day and keep at it for several months.

But what about the people who don't want to make significant long-term money? Are you out of luck if you just want to make a few hundred quick bucks? Not at all. In fact, it is quite easy to make quick money on the Internet if you are skilled at writing articles.

Go to one of the large forums in your niche, I use Digital Point and Warrior Forum. Once there, go to the sections for general marketing discussions. Look for questions on marketing a product and offer to write articles to help them promote their product. Then, enter a post or two on each forum offering to write articles for others.

You will not get rich using this technique. But then, you said you only wanted to make a few hundred, right? Most people will pay $4 - $5 per article, depending on length, quality, etc. If you are experienced, you can probably write a 400 - 500 word article in about half an hour. Therefore, you can pretty easily write four articles per day. If we use the lower figure of $4 each, you will earn about $480 in a month using this technique.

All in all, if you are looking to make quick money writing articles, forums are you best bet. This method has the added advantage of allowing you to set your own terms. If a client needs 10 articles, you can write five on day one and require some or all of the payment on delivery. However, in most cases, people want to review the articles before completing the payment.

If you do not want to spend time in the forums, you can use one of the many companies on the Internet that pay you for your articles. However, you will not make much more from these companies because they receive a portion of your earnings on every sale you make. And, because these companies have so many authors writing for them, you would not make much money right away.

Content, content, content is the mantra. Then many gurus go on to espouse 'go for the long tail keywords' - it is easy to get top rankings for these keywords. Tosh - more of this later.

Long Term Keywords

Say you are trying to create a page on your website that is targeted at the keyword "Directory". Hey that is a highly competitive keyword with 977,000,000 competing pages. However, if you design a page targeting "top submission list of business directories in UK", the competition is down to just 240,000 pages. So the gurus will tell that is easier to get a top ranking on that phrase - its true but is it worth it?

Proportionate Effort

How many vistors will you get for such a phrase? Probably peanuts - remember you still have to create the page, and promote it with a linking strategy. So how many long term keyword phrases (and content pages) will you have to target to get reasonable traffic? It is also probably true that sites with high rankings for "directory" or "directories" or "business directories" will also do well for this long tail keyword phrase because the power phrase is "directory" or "business directory".

OK - if you go for the killer phrase, nobody is going to kid you that it is going to be easy! Aiming for a 1000 visitors a day from one keyword phrase has its attractions though! But as before you have to create the content and have an extensive linking strategy. However, even if your ultimate aim is a Page 1 ranking, one of the side effects is that you will rank well for long tail keywords anyhow as the campaign rolls out. For example, you will start to rank well on various combinations with the keyword "directory" included.

This is not going to happen overnight but there are plenty examples where small companies have taken on the big boys. Even for example in the highly competitive market of Golf, at least one of big hitters started from nothing and competes with the big boys.

Every one of us is susceptible to the hype we see on the news, read in the newspapers or hear on the radio about people making big bucks on the internet. We've all felt that jealousy of it not being us and that's what has catapulted us into wanting to make our presence felt on the internet as well. The first thing we do is buy into all the hype, so-called gurus tell us about how to make millions through internet marketing. You know it can be done. You've got witnesses, but everything you've tried seems to have failed.

It's true. You can succeed in internet marketing just like all those others that have made you jealous. All you need are the tools and the knowledge of how it's done. I'm not going to tell you not to buy into what the so-called experts and gurus are saying. Because some of those programs work. Many people have made tons of money following those programs. Many haven't. The ones who have succeeded were armed with the tools that they needed to succeed.

The first sets of tools that you are going to need are going to come directly from you. You are going to have to possess the set of qualities that can make you succeed in internet marketing, offline marketing and the game of life. If you don't have these qualities, pack it up now, and get a job.

Anyone going into business for themselves, with a partner, or with a team of colleagues must have commitment to the endeavor. If you aren't committed to succeeding in internet marketing, then maybe your heart lies somewhere else. Do that instead. You also must have self-determination. The motivation to succeed in internet marketing has to come from within you. Your colleagues, your partner, your spouse or your children cannot be the ones motivated about your success. It has to come from you.

You can fill them in on things that you have tried and that don't seem to work. They can tell you what you did wrong or lead you down another path. Scrounge the libraries for the latest books written about internet marketing. It's best to check publishing dates on books because the internet changes so rapidly that some of the information you read in these books could be out-dated. The library is also a good resource for trade magazine. Read magazines that are specifically focused on your core industry and internet marketing. If the libraries don't have trade magazines, don't forget how easy it is to slide over to the newsstands and major bookstore chains and find nearly anything you want.

The next step is to set a goal. What exactly do you want to accomplish through internet marketing. Do you want to use internet marketing to sell goods directly to consumers or businesses? Or do you want to use internet marketing as a tool to generate leads for others and by way getting paid for doing so? Defining the goal is the most important step. At what level of internet marketing will you be involved?

You will also determine what success means to you? This goal is important to determine whether your efforts are working the way that you envisioned them. Article Marketing - Quality For Consumers

If you look around the Internet there are several recommended styles of article marketing so how do you decide which is the right way for you? On the one hand there are those who swear by writing several articles a day and submitting them to as many directories as they can. Then there are those who write one article and either use software to spin them into several articles or make small changes like title and first paragraph and submit the similar articles to the same sites. Then there are those who write one quality article daily, weekly or monthly and just submit to a few sites.

All of those ways of article marketing may work, but which works the best? Lets just go through the different ways.

1. Most of us do not have the time to write several articles a day and if they are about the same subject, intending to promote one particular site those articles can become repetitive and lose quality to quantity. Of course some people can write several good articles a day but I do not think that I am one of them.

2. Spinning articles might be a great time saver, but when you look at the results of spinning they can be laughable. The articles often do not make sense to the reader and can be difficult to understand in much the same way as badly translated articles. Many directories do not want those articles; I know that I do not want articles on my site that visitors may have difficulty in understanding.

3. Changing the first paragraph and or the title of an article and submitting it to different sites is great, that means there is not so much of a duplicate content issue. Submitting the altered versions of the same article to the same directories is not on. Last week a joker submitted the same article to my directory with slightly different titles 4 times using 4 different accounts. As if I was not going to notice the similarities when I looked at the list of articles waiting for approval!

4. Then there is quality and submitting to fewer sites. A quality article is a pleasure to approve. I enjoy reading the article, I know that the quality of my site is going to improve and I know that the quality articles are going to bring in more traffic to my site. I also know that a quality article does not need to be submitted to hundreds of sites or spun. A quality article will be picked up on by publishers and replicated pretty darn quick.

You can guess which article marketing style I prefer; its quality all the way. Looking at number 4 I sound like a proper know it all. I do not think that I know everything but I do know what my site stats tell me. The author articles that get the most hits are nearly always the articles that I have regarded as high quality, or have been interesting enough to read all the way through.

I have different ways of defining quality that may make me seem contrary, but I have always looked at things in different ways. A business colleague calls me a lateral thinker, I think he means a pain in the b**t!

Quality that is extremely well written, but on occasion no matter how well an article is written if the content is dry and boring the article is not going to fly for the majority of readers unless it contains specific information. I do not claim to be an extremely good writer, I think that I am an adept writer who can occasionally pull off unexpected great results almost by accident. I have had enough of those accidents to be able to figure out why those articles are hitting the spot and why articles such as this one is unlikely to produce masses of hits.

One of my accidents was an article about where I live. I wrote it as an example because I wanted members of my travel site to write about where they live. It started out as an article about a regular town and without initially intending to I added paragraphs about places of interest and tourist spots within 10 miles. It dawned on me after writing the article that although I live in an industrial town that would not be considered on it's own a tourist centre, like most places there are tourist spots close enough by to include a mention in an article.

That article does better for hits than most articles of my own and those of authors on my sites that have been especially written for article marketing. I asked myself why and came up with 2 reasons. One was that I had added a good variety of keywords and phrases without thinking about it. The other reason I suspect is that the article is unique, very different to any other travel article that I have seen out there. It is also obvious that I know the place well whereas most article marketing travel articles don't give you a sense of the authors knowing the places that they write about and show little personality.

Another accident was an article written a month ago about my bad experience with a spyware fraud. I was so cheesed off that I turned to writing to make myself feel better. I have never known an article get so many hits in such a short time. It has been picked up by a lot of webmasters, bloggers and ezines and I am sure it still has plenty of scope. I have even seen it on some geek sites, now that's something I never thought would happen to an article of mine!

I think that the article is doing well because it is offering information written from obvious personal experience that people want and need and those people have had the common sense to do a search before being scared into parting with their money.

The top 2 articles on my directory every month are my own scam warnings. They are only on a couple of my sites so the hits are not spread between zillions of article directories. Again I am providing information that people want and need. Neither of the articles were written for the purpose of article marketing and a variety of keywords and phrases happened naturally.

So to me a quality article is reasonably well written, packed with information written from experience that people want or need, unique or as different to other articles as possible and showing some personality.

The fatal flaw in my accidents is that I have not used the articles to promote money making ventures, just my sites in general. I will have to get a grip and accidentally make some money from them!

I'll end this far too long article by including a quote from a forum that made me think. 'Thats a major problem I see in article directories -- its so difficult to find good content in them that they are not nearly as useful to article consumers as they could be.'

Once you have created your pages, you will need to link to them from your home page. Make sure that you name your pages with keywords that you can want to ge ranked for. Do a little research and try to choose less competitive keywords or phrases. You will also need to create a sitemap. This is simply a page that lists all of the pages in your website. You should always submit your sitemap to Google, to be sure that they index all of your pages.

6. Now it's time for your concluding paragraph. Be sure to incorporate your keywords in this paragraph as well. Not too much, 1-2 times should be fine.

7. If you have any images, be sure to add keywords in the alt tags. While this is as not as powerful as it once was, it will help some.

8. Add your targeted keyword and keyword phrases to the meta, description and title tags.

That's pretty much it for on-page search engine optimization. Now, you need to focus on off-page optimization. This involves generating links to your website or blog.
